Mental Math Strategies
This year we began using a new math curriculum, Right Start Mathematics. There has been much review as we've adapted to using an abacus and various new-to-Wynn mental math strategies. Even so, this new curriculum has been a perfect fit and I can't imagine us using another. There is not much that can compare to "the light bulb going on" when one finally grasps a concept, and we have had many "light bulb" moments.
I Can Statement: I can use various mental math strategies (making 10, multiples of 10, regrouping, etc.) to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. I can explain my thinking by writing about the process and the strategies I used. I can explain my own mathematical thinking and respond to the thinking of others. |
Place Value and Expanded Form
Wynn has always been very good at understanding place value. That said, it had been awhile since we reviewed the concept of expanded form so I decided to give him a pre-assessment before diving into this section of the curriculum. Wynn scored 100% on the chapter test pre-assessment.
I Can Statement: I can understand and connect written numbers to quantities. |
Multiplication
Groups of, Repeated Addition, Arrays, and Commutative Property:
This term Wynn has been learning how to show his understanding of multiplication number sentences by using illustrations. Each morning during math he draws the number sentence in terms of repeated addition, groups of, and an array (rows and columns). I Can Statement: I can use pictures, objects, equations, or words to represent mathematical thinking. |
