Reading
At the beginning of the third quarter, Wynn read through The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman for guided reading. Below are work samples from this book including a worksheet on hyperboles (figurative language), an informal reading assessment (IRA), and a final project to celebrate the book. Although the level of this book was an independent read for Wynn (3.9) we incorporated it into the curriculum in order to work on fluency. (Besides, it is a really fun read and tied in perfectly with our study of the Middle Ages).

Language
Language I Can Statement -- I can figure out how words are related and how their meaning might be similar (i.e., interpret figurative language, including similes, metaphors, and hyperboles; recognize the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs; use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, and homographs) to better understand words.
Greek and Latin
Last year and this, Wynn has been piecing together a reference book of Greek and Latin prefixes, root words, and suffixes. Below is a sample of this quarter's work.
Informal Reading Assessments
Informal Reading Assessment (IRA) -- How I Learned Geography by Uri Shulevitz; 4.4 AR
During guided read, Wynn is often assessed to see how he is progressing and what skills can be improved. As part of a unit on early exploration, Wynn read the award-winning picture book How I Learned Geography by Uri Shulevitz. He read it fluently and with terrific expression. This was to be expected since it is leveled as an "independent read" for him. This particular book, however, has many multi-syllable "big words" in it. It was noticed during this assessment that Wynn has a habit of guessing some of these large words instead of taking the time to break them down (chunk them). After talking this over, Wynn decided his next reading goal is to build stamina when chunking larger words.

Comparing Literature
During a social science unit on exploration, Wynn was asked to read through the historical chapter book Pedro's Journal. He was then asked to read Steven Kellogg's The Island of the Skog and compare both stories using a type of venn diagram. His comparison is posted below.
This helps meet the following I Can Statement for ELA: I can compare and contrast stories in the same genre |
Writer's Workshop

As a grand finish for the Early Explorers unit, Wynn wrote this informational text about explorer Ferdinand Magellan. He was asked to use three different sources. Below is a graphic organizer he made during the planning stage, a rough draft with edits, a final rewrite, and a final typed document.
